What Is A Fractal?

Fractals are mathematical constructs which are used to describe complex geometry. They achieve a "natural" look by repeating patterns at different scales.

The fractal maps on this site were created by custom built software, which you can download for free here. The Fractal World software incorporates several well-known fractal algorithms developed by Ken Perlin and F. Kenton Musgrave. The program also uses a couple of home grown fractal procedures. These fractals are blended mathematically to produce a variety of heterogeneous terrains.
